Early Collages involved the re-appropriating of previously made images and found materials into new compositions. First made popular by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in 1912, with their explorations into Cubism, they utilize newsprint, postage stamps and other painted material to create 3 dimensional works of art.

Chong’s collages are unique in that they do not utilize previously appropriated images or found materials. Rather, he tears large sheets of Japanese rice paper into a composition of smaller shapes, applies dye to some and creates a mixed media of acrylic and oil paints as appropriate.
